INENG, LLC: The Name

I thought through all of the words I could think of that described myself and my work:  Innovative, Ingenuity, Integrity, Inventiveness, Industrious, Inquisitive, Inspired, Instrumental, Integration, Intelligent, Intelligible, Intense, Intentional, Intrinsic, Intuitive, Involved.

They all start with "In", so I tacked on an Eng for Engineering.  A friend mentioned to me that "In", as a prefix, means "not".  That is true, and fits my mode of development very well.  Engineers are taught a very rigid problem solving process.  It goes this way: define all of the inputs, design a system to control them, build it and test it.  Nearer the end of development, when most of the path is set, this approach can work well.

However, at the beginning of a concept, there are much more efficient methods.  I like to call mine "options engineering".  First we define the goal.  Then identify the major challenges that will prevent the realization of the goal.  Finally, find the fastest and least expensive way to test for solutions to these problems.  If, at any point, you have multiple paths that could be followed, choose the option that gives you the most flexibility.  Keep repeating the process until you have a working product concept.
